In 2009, the Little Compton Agricultural Conservancy Trust purchased the development rights to Plat 2, Lot 11-11, from Ms. Rachel Elder. Plat 2, Lot 11-11 is comprised of 6.77 acres of land and is located on West Main Road. The property is protected through a Deed to Development Rights with the Little Compton Agricultural Conservancy Trust and the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). Lot 11-11 is one of four contiguous lots protected by the Peckham family. The property is currently farmed by Jason Peckham.
A Baseline Documentation Report, for this property, was completed in March 2017. The report outlines the history of the property, land uses and provides other information. An except from the report is below. The entire report is available on this website.
Prior Land Uses: Periodic historical photographs dating back to 1939 show the long agricultural history of the Protected Property. Early photos show the current conservation area bisected into several separate fields by a number of dividing stonewalls. This configurations was maintained until sometime in the 1950’s. In 1959-1961, the Watson Reservoir was constructed to the east of the Protected property by the City of Newport.
Current Land Uses: The protected property is currently being farmed by Jason Peckham.
Proposed Future Use: It is the purpose of the Deed to Development Rights to maintain the Protected Property for agricultural production and the preservation of conservation values in perpetuity.
